Yesterday, we had a wonderful day! It started out at First Christian Church of Las Cruces. Our pastor, Rev. Linda Mervine, preached on Luke 14:25ff. This begins with a passage that I’ve long had problems with. “Unless you hate your parents……” Now that is so NOT the God I understand, nor the Jesus I experience. In fact, it bothered me so much I had to come home and do a little research. What could it mean to hate our parents… and by extension, our loved ones? I must have been so kerfuffled by the reading that what Linda had to say didn’t truly sink in. Then I read something that actually does make sense. The idea that Jesus was speaking in hyperbole (something I do a lot of) just by itself was insufficient. But when I analyze what I came up with, in essence it says the same thing… but differently.
Unless the disciple loves Jesus is so much that all other loves are hatred by comparison… Yeah, I can see that. As Scott pointed out that’s pretty much what Linda had to say. Okay. I can get into that. I suspect I FAIL at it far more than I succeed, but at least I can accept the saying now.
Afterwards, we went out to eat with some friends from church. Michael, Steve, Jack Scott and I ate at the International Cafe. I didn’t quite expect what I got. In spite of what I ordered was precisely what I got. Apparently I was reading challenged when I ordered! Hummus, tabouli, baba ganoush, & dolmas with pita bread. It was quite delicious, though!
Prayer Intention
Prayer “is the root, the fountain, the mother of a thousand blessings.” Chrysostom
I continue to pray for Direction, and specifically this week for Direction in my spiritual life.
