In Need of Boots

September 22, 2013.

I recently purchased a hiking guide to this area. There are 40 hikes all within a day’s range of the Las Cruces/El Paso area. If one is up to the effort, the trip to the trailhead, the hike itself, and the trip home can all be accomplished in 1 day.

The book is organized by mountain range or geological zone, and there are lots of those around here. There’s the Dona Ana Mountains, Franklin Mountains, Organ Mountains, well, too many to list here.

I went through the book Saturday, and created an Excel spreadsheet listing the trails by difficulty, ranging from 1 to 6, with 1 being easy, and 6 being extremely strenuous. This isn’t the rating system the author used, but the author’s system was inconsistent. Of course the means the ratings are pretty subjective.

There are 11 hikes rated “easy” by the author, or 1 by me. They range in length from six tenths of a mile to 4.5 miles. Over the next 6 months or so, I hope to do all 11 of these. Next Saturday, we’ve invited our local friends to join us on a 3 mile hike.

I really need to find a job though… my walking shoes are almost worn out, and I could use a new pair of hiking shoes. I intend by this time next year to be hiking in the difficult to strenuous range, and that’s going to require shoes/boots with good ankle support.

Prayer Intention

  1. Hey, Eric
As I’ve been reading your posts, it reminded me of this song recorded by John Denver (from the album, I Want to Live) “Thirsty Boots”

    enjoy!

  2. Karla, thank you SO much for this link. It has been ages since I last listened to John Denver. I know some put him down, I always enjoyed his music.

    Hope all’s well!
