Tuesday, Scott and I worked on our porch. A week or so ago, we tore up the carpet that was there, and purchased a special deck paint that is supposed to prevent splinters. Sunday, we removed the treads from the steps up to the porch from the sidewalk. But in the process we discovered that the stringers were in very bad shape and had to be replaced. Monday, while Scott was in class, I drove up to Sutherlands and bought three four step stringers. Yesterday, since Scott has no classes on Tuesday, we started to put them in.

Apparently we have non-standard steps. The standard stringers apparently have an 8 inch tread, while what we have is an 11 inch tread. What I bought will not work. And, you can’t buy what we need, which meant we had to make our own. We used the 2 X 12 lumber we bought for treads (which is what was there before.)

As usual, we do not have everything we need. We gave away or sold most of our tools before moving down here because “we’ll never do jobs like this ourselves again!” Ha! So, we drove out to the farm, to see if Terry would lend us a circular saw and a reciprocating saw. She did. We chatted for about an hour with her and Al, met her friend Scott, then came home. We ate lunch, for by now it was noon.

Eventually we began the process of cutting stringers and putting them in, then, since we had used the treads for stringers, we began cutting the lumber we purchased for risers, to use as both treads and risers. We got half way done before we ran out of lumber, as we knew we would. So, today’s chore is to go get 2 more boards, get them cut, and installed. Oh, and 10 more screws!

This morning, I let my girls down. Woke up with a headache and nausea. They only got a walk to the green and back, not our usual morning long walk.
