A Day in the Life

It stormed last night. I woke up just before midnight in response to a biological imperative, and was treated to a disco dance stage of strobe lights. Imperative resolved, I lay in bed, listen to the thunder and the downpour, watching the flashes of light. It was quite refreshing.

This morning, before leaving for work, I walked the girls down to the park. Puddles of water still polka-dotted the street. Around here, that means it rained a lot… if it was a light rain, it would have evaporated already in the dry air of the Chihuahuan Desert. The air was clear, cleaner smelling than it has been in months around here!

All the clouds were gone, the sky was spotless, with the moon and stars twinkling above. And over yonder, the Organs were silhouetted against the faint glow of a sun that was yet forty five minutes from rising.

This kind of morning is what I am in love with about Las Cruces, New Mexico. It truly is a Land of Enchantment!

I have settled well into my new job, though the change of routine that it has forced is a little harder to embrace.

My morning starts at 5:15 am. Or it should! Let’s start this a different way.

Monday through Thursday, I get off work at 4:00 pm. I cross the parking lot to the gym, and ride a recumbant exercise bike. It’s easier on my back. Completing that, I head for home. Currently, that’s before 4:30, as I am only doing 15 minutes on the bike, with a 3 minute cool down. Next week, I bump that to 30 minutes. I also intend to work with the trainer at the gym to set up a “real workout” prorgram. So, I’m now on my way home. I arrive about 5:10 to 5:15. It’s a 30 minute drive from work to home, and add a 5 minute delay due to road construction.

From arrival at home, my evenings are relatively lazy. We walk the dogs at least once. We have dinner. At about 8 pm, I start the process of preparing for another day. I get my lunch ready, set out my clothes, take a shower. Now, ready for bed, I help Scott get the girls ready for their final walk of the night. Then, with them out the door, I go to bed, generally about 9 pm.

My goal is to wake up at 5:15 am, as stated above. But my body is still fighting me on that; this morning, I was awake at 4:30, but forced myself to remain in bed until the alarm sounded at 5:15.

From wake up until 6, I handle more biological imperatives, then check email, my favorite comics, check out Twitter and Facebook, and see if there is anything new on a friend’s LiveJournal site. At 6, I dress, eat breakfast, then take the girls for a walk. A quick one. By 6:30 I’m in the car, and a day begins.

That half hour drive to work is nice. It’s cool, the sun is showing more sign of rising, the traffic is relatively calm. I pray.

It’s a good thing to do!
