Creativity

Thought for Today

Unless we are creators we are not fully alive. …Creativity is a way of living life, no matter our vocation or how we earn our living. — Madeleine L’Engle

I sometimes wonder – in what way I am creative? I have mentioned before that I have no real gifts, and lament from time to time that I want to be creative, but just am not. Creativity is itself a gift. A painter has been given the creative gift of painting. The same can be said for any art. Art is God’s gift to the artist.

But there’s more than that. Art is not the only gift of creativity. The parent participates in God’s Creative Act, both the father and the mother are co-participants in God’s Creation.

I read yesterday that “It is blasphemous for any of us to say ‘I am not creative’. All we do is create. We have desires and we create experiences from our desires.” (Jan Phillips)

I wonder what my creative talent is… I still am blind to it.

God, open my eyes, that I may see the creativity within my soul, and open my soul to my heart that I too may give birth to that which longs to be set free, your Spirit within me.”

Prayer Intention

Let my prayer stand before you like incense; let my uplifted hands be like the evening offering. (Ps 141:2 CEB)

Today my continued prayer intention is for Direction, and specifically this week for Direction in my work life.

  1. You are creative, Eric. The act of writing your blog was an act of creativity. I know that most of us have a desire to create or do something that brings acclaim and praise from others, and some people are fortunate (or cursed) to achieve that acclaim. But true creativity occurs everyday, the trick is to slow down enough to appreciate it.

Creativity brings order to disorder. Without creativity there is eventually chaos; it’s the law of entropy. Some people can achieve the flashy, and that is fine. But real life happens every day. Every day there are dishes to wash or cloths to fold or spouses to comfort. Those small acts don’t get reported on the evening news, but they make life enjoyable.
